ACA Open Enrollment: Dates, Documents, and How to Enroll
If you buy your own health insurance, the ACA Marketplace open enrollment period is your main window each year to enroll in a plan or change the one you have. Florida uses the federal Marketplace, so the dates below apply if you live here in Fort Lauderdale or elsewhere in the state. Missing the window usually means waiting a full year, so it pays to be ready before it opens.
The dates that matter
Open enrollment runs from November 1 to January 15. Enroll by December 15 and your coverage can start on January 1. Enroll between December 16 and January 15 and your coverage starts on February 1 instead. Our advice is simple: aim for the December 15 deadline. Starting the year covered is the whole point, and a last minute application leaves no room to fix a paperwork problem.
Who the Marketplace is built for
Marketplace plans serve people who do not get health coverage through a job: the self employed, early retirees who are not yet on Medicare, part time and gig workers, and families comparing the cost of COBRA or a spouse's workplace plan. Plans cover the essential health benefit categories, including doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and preventive care, and no one can be turned away or charged more because of a pre-existing condition.
Documents and details to gather first
Gather your information before you sit down to apply. You will need the names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers of everyone applying for coverage, your home address, and information about anyone in your household who already has coverage. Have income information handy for everyone in the household: recent pay stubs, a W-2, or last year's tax return. Add details about any job based coverage available to your family, even if you do not plan to use it. If immigration status applies to anyone who is applying, have those documents ready as well. Having everything in one folder turns a stressful application into a short one.
How financial help works, without the jargon
Many Marketplace shoppers qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers what they pay each month. The amount is based mainly on your household size and your expected household income for the year you want coverage. A lower income generally means a larger credit, and some households also qualify for extra savings on deductibles, copays, and coinsurance when they choose a Silver plan. No one can honestly promise you a specific amount before your application is reviewed, and we will not. What we can do is walk through the application with you so the estimate is based on your real numbers. If your income or household changes during the year, report it, because the credit is reconciled when you file your taxes.
Choosing a plan: look past the premium
Plans come in metal tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. As a rule, Bronze plans have lower monthly premiums and higher costs when you use care, while Gold and Platinum plans reverse that pattern. Check that your doctors are in the plan's network and that your prescriptions are on its drug list before you settle on a plan for its premium. Then compare your likely total cost for the year, premiums plus the care you expect to use, and not just the monthly bill.
Missed the window? Life events open another one
Losing job based coverage, getting married, having or adopting a child, and moving to a new area are examples of life events that can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. In most cases you have 60 days from the event to enroll, and the clock starts whether you know about it or not. If something in your life changed, call us quickly and we will tell you whether you qualify.
How we help
Working through your enrollment with a licensed agent costs you nothing extra. We will gather your documents with you, compare plans using your doctors and prescriptions, and explain the trade offs in plain language. And if a Marketplace plan turns out not to be your best route, we will tell you that too.
